One of the most common questions manufacturers ask when evaluating ultrasonic tubular processors is simple: what size do I actually need? Power rating drives throughput, so getting it right matters both for performance and for capital efficiency.
What Power Rating Determines
An ultrasonic processor’s power rating, measured in kilowatts, determines how much acoustic energy is delivered into the fluid passing through it — which in turn determines throughput, the volume of product that can be processed per hour at the required intensity.
1.5kW Processors: Lower-Volume, Continuous Duty
A 1.5kW processor is well suited to lower-throughput, continuous production. One Hilsonic client has run their entire white-based paint manufacturing line on a single 1.5kW processor for more than 12 months, demonstrating that smaller units can comfortably handle sustained commercial production for moderate volumes.
3kW Processors: Higher-Throughput Operations
A 3kW processor delivers significantly more throughput — capable of blending around 10 tonnes, or roughly ten thousand litres, of lubricating oil in a single hour. For manufacturers running high-volume lube oil blending or similarly demanding production schedules, this is the workhorse specification.
How to Decide Between Them
- Current and projected throughput — size for your production targets, not just current volume, to avoid needing to upgrade shortly after installation
- Product viscosity and complexity — more viscous or harder-to-disperse products may need more power per unit volume
- Production schedule — continuous 24/7 operation versus batch production affects the effective throughput you need from a given power rating
- Single vessel vs multiple lines — whether you are processing through one vessel or distributing across multiple production lines changes the sizing calculation
Why Guessing Is Risky
Undersizing limits your throughput and can force premature reinvestment in larger equipment. Oversizing wastes capital on capacity you do not need. Because performance also depends on the specific product being processed, the only reliable way to size correctly is a demonstration and assessment using your actual product.
